"I'm a genius. Didn't they tell you?" - Ram

Ram is the eccentric wheelchair-using leader of the Technos.

He is a computer genius who originally formed the Technos to enforce a better world with technology, he directed the invasion of the City and forcibly kidnapped half of the population to use as slaves. But he appeases the population by restoring electricity and giving out food.

Ram's ultimate plan was to live forever in Virual Reality by entering Cryosleep. With the population being addicted to the Paradise Game, everyone would be given work to sustain his Sleeping Pod as the City has coals to last 1000 years.

His plans were twarted and he was defeated by the Mall Rats. Left to rot in the City dumpster, bounty hunter Slade rescues him to Liberty with the intention of using him to locate his long lost brother Mega. Ram learns to walk again and later joins the Mall Rats in taking down Mega and The Collective.

Personality[]

Ram was a childhood prodigy, graduating college before the virus hit (so, when he was around 14 or thirteen) and is now known as a visionary and genius. This overcompensates for his physical (wheelchair bound) and phobic (hypochondriac) disabilities. He is also known to be a little paranoid and having an explosive temper. Although he may be ruthless at times, he is very rewarding when it comes to loyalty and excellent performance. You will see his merciless personality if these expectations are not met.

His survival skills include mathematics, computer and technology sense, and ability to lead. His character expands with the loss of two loves and his struggle to overcome his disabilities, creating a slightly more empathetic and power-driven character.

Ram Java Siva Airstrip

Ram and his wives Java and Siva

The extremely intelligent leader of the Techno forces is able to turn his hand to very complicated programming, possessing a quick-thinking mind which excels in the adaptation of technology and the implementation of weaponry. Yet, for all of his obvious genius, these attributes are tempered by a deep-seeded arrogance, a violent temper, as well as the irrational nature of his germophobia.

However, despite his sometimes sudden and shocking outbursts, Ram possesses a wit and sarcasm that he isn’t afraid to display, and he enjoys his moments of escapism within Reality Space. Setting his sights on the occupation of the City, Ram directs the Technos to conquer and invade. His ethos is to return the world to a sense of civilisation based on technology, which will in turn, make it easier to run … as well as control.

Ram Siva Java S4

Ram in his many virtual reality simulations

To this end, Ram creates various programmes to try and enhance the lives of those within the City, including turning the electricity back on, and introducing virtual reality to the masses. He is married to Java and Siva, and wants to complete the collection on discovering the third sibling, Ebony. Ram doesn’t take no for an answer, and eventually takes Ebony as his bride. However, despite being in a unique position of power, Ebony is not happy, especially because of her growing attraction with Jay, and eventually leaves him, going on the run with the former Techno general.

This incident sees Ram more angry than heartbroken. One of his ‘trophies’ has escaped. He also has bigger problems, as Ram’s secret Paradise Project is nearing completion, a project that will see him finally escape this mortal coil and live forever within Reality Space. As the endgame draws near, Ram believes that he has achieved his goal … but in reality he has been duped, ending up discarded on a trash heap in a dazed and confused state of mind.

Ram in Liberty

Ram in Liberty

Ram is asleep in his wheelchair in a garbage pit having been left for dead by Mega. Some kids come by to destroy his chair when a mysterious stranger pulls up in a motorbike and rescues him. It turns out that this stranger is a man named Slade and he takes him to Liberty where they meet Ruby. At first Ram hated being here and often tried to escape but thanks to Slade he stayed and thanks to Ruby and Slade's influence he picked up some crutches and began trying to walk. Ram also reveals why he is wheelchair bound. He tells Slade that he is in Reality Space without the safeties (as there were none at the time). He jumped off a building, thinking he could fly, but he was put into his wheelchair.

Slade brought pieces for Ram to build a computer and when Ruby found out Ram said it was because Slade had a brain disease and was dying which turns out to be a lie. Lex comes to Liberty and things start out rocky but the two became friends and when Ebony and Siva came they started an alliance to take down Mega who was controlling the city. Ram steals Slade's bike and rides into the city to get Java he brings her back believing they could start a life together but instead she tries to kill Ebony.

Java-5-(19)

Ram and Java confess their love to each other

It ends in a laser duel between Java and Ebony, they take two steps out and Java shoots only to hit Siva who jumped in the way, Ebony furious shoots Java and Ram loses it. Eventually Ram comes back and they launch an attack on Mega and win, Ram takes the Technos back under his control and places everything under an A.I. he created that looks like Zoot. This Zoot takes over and releases Virus Mark II, Ram was seen fleeing the city on the boat with the rest of the Mall Rats.

The Tribe: A New World[]

While lost at sea, Ram consistently keeps asking the Mall Rats to return to the City to which they refuse as they feel it would be suicide. They eventually wash ashore on an island and Ram becomes nervous. Finally Ram reveals that before the virus, he had been in contact with a person called Kami who is the leader of The Collective, a massive organisation consisting of various tribes. The Technos were briefly apart of it before they broke away to conquer the Mall Rats city, he even sent a message to Kami saying that the virus had reemerged to keep them away. However Ram had never told any of the Technos of The Collective's existence as he feared they might betray him.

Ram also believes Kami was the true culprit for the AI Zoot going out of control. Ram discards his techno uniform and the "T" in his forehead, the main reason for this was to stay incognito from The Collective in case they were on one of the islands they controlled. When The Collective forces of the Legion and Ebony attack, Ram is taken away.

The Tribe: A New Dawn[]

Held prisoner by Eloise and her Zootists, the seductive brother to Blake is determined to break Ram and uncover all the secrets that Kami demands. It is these secrets that eventually see the Mall Rats return to not only the City, but a journey back to the place where it all began – Eagle Mountain. We learn that Ram did not conceive of most of the technology that he has been credited with. Although he adapted most of the technology to his own purposes, it was originally technology devised by the adults. We learn of secret ‘arks’, the last ditch attempt to save the best of humanity as the virus rampaged throughout the globe. Ram adapted most of the hibernation chambers, which he had previously uncovered in the secret vaults of Eagle Mountain during their initial invasion of the City, into Reality Space interfaces.

Eloise forces Ram to reveal the access codes to level 2 of Eagle Mountain. The former Techno leader has no choice but to unlock it, his life is on the line. He later uncovers a special data drive and the access ring that is hidden on one of the adult’s bodies – it contains the accumulation of knowledge from the adults. This seems to be the secret prize that Kami has been after all this time. With the aid of the Mall Rats however, the AI system is shut down and the group retrieve the priceless artifact. These shocking events reveal that the adults were more prepared than the Mall Rats ever realised, and that, perhaps, there is more to the virus than a simple pharmaceutical accident. Whatever the real truth may be, Ram still has many questions to answer … and the Mall Rats are still to face Kami himself and his Collective.

The Tribe: (R)Evolution[]

Ram continues to try breaking into the hard drive that the adults left behind. Believing the Kami computer might be instrumental to unlocking the drive, he decides to head to Eagle Mountain with Jack, Ellie and Lex. But when they reach there, the adult units are revealed to have been taken by unknown forces. They realise The Collective have started an invasion on the City and managed to capture all the Mall Rats. However, Ram, Jack and Ellie were able to escape the invasion forces. They hack into one of the drones and use it to fly to Ram's former hometown. Ram had opted to return to his former base as he had stored backup technology incase he ever needed to return.

However Ved is revealed to be alive and had taken over the former Techno base. It's revealed that Ram had deleted Ved due to Mega's continual accusations that Ved might rebel. Ved had been sent into slavery but managed to trade stun guns for his freedom, where he eventually formed the tribe called The Virts, consisting of former Technos and kids from Ram's former hometown. The Virts drown in Virtual Reality headsets in their free time.

Seeking revenge, Ved decides to contact The Collective to trade all 3 of them for possible information on Cloe, who Ved had been desperately looking for. Jack and Ellie are locked in a separate room from Ram, who tries to convince Ved not to contact The Collective, but the latter doesn't listen. Using layers of encryption to remain anonymous, Ved comes into contact with The Broker and tries to make a deal. However days go by without any response, Ved becomes suspicious that his location may have been identified by The Collective. Feeling bound by what Jay would have wanted him to truly do, he decides to release Jack and Ellie. But Ved decides to try trading Ram for Alice and Bray, however Ram manages to escape.

Ram's house

Ram revisits his childhood home, this time for real

Jack, Ellie and Ved try to track down where Ram might have gone, but are horrified to learn numerous drones from The Collective have appeared around Ram's former hometown. Ved realises there's only one place Ram might be, his former house, which was seen in Virtual Reality when Ram was in a coma in Series 4. While they try to evade notice of the drones, all of them suddenly malfunction while they are travelling through the abandoned town. They eventually find Ram at his old house who has uncovered an old laptop that he stored in his attic. Ram had managed to hack into The Collective's system to disable the drones.

Ved is shocked to learn his location had almost been found by The Collective, but Ram offers to teach Ved how to hit back for the sake of old times. All of them return to old the Techno base and Ram organises a hacking masterclass with Jack, Ellie, Ved and the entire tribe of Virts on their laptops. Ram successfully hacks into the K.A.M.I System in Eagle Mountain and uses it as pathway to enter the K.A.M.I Prototype system in Eden, where the rest of the Mall Rats are held captive. They try to damage all their programs, but Ram accidentally makes the K.A.M.I Systems attack each other, which ends up battling not only their hard drives but affecting every area in control of The Collective. The chaos is saved by Cami at Eden, who manages to stop systems from going more haywire.

Ram, Ved, Jack and Ellie travel to Eden and reunite with all the Mall Rats. Ram is startled to finally meet the elusive leader of The Collective, Cami, as he originally believed that she was a male from his past interactions online.

Quotes[]

  • "I do not want to be alone!"
  • "You're never safer than in the bosom of a loving family. Eh, Ved?"
  • "Friends argue. He'll pay for it."
  • "Let me guess who you're talking about... Ebony. She swore her loyalty to me through lips as red as cherries, and then destroyed my life from the depths of a heart as dark as coal."

Trivia[]

  • Ram's Family

    Ram's Parents

Ram's germaphobic characteristic was actually taken from creator Raymond Thompson, who is a germaphobe himself. [1]
  • Ram is one of the four characters where both his parents were seen via flashback/photo. The others are Salene, Trudy and Dal. Although Bray and Danni's fathers were seen, their mothers weren't.
  • Although not mentioned in the series, Tribeworld articles revealed that his birth name is Ramone Kingsley. [2] He probably used the name Ram as a tribute to the computer term RAM, thus citing his memory at the same time, but it's unknown if this name is considered canon.
  • There are multiple similarities between Ram and Davros from Doctor Who. Both are super geniuses who are wheelchair bound. They are both germaphobic and used advanced technology to control people.
  • When Slade asked him his name, he responded by saying Gabe, short for Gabriel. Ram uses this name again in The Tribe: A New Dawn when he first encounters the Zootists to protect his real identity.
  • Ram is the only main antagonist of the show to have been fully reformed from his villainous ways. This is more apparent in the novels as he has joined the Mall Rats by that point, although he maintains he only allies with them simply because there's no one else and doesn't consider himself a Mall Rat.
  • Ram was voted by fans as 6th Greatest Villain and 8th Best Hero in 2015 polls. [3]
  • In a 2022 podcast, Ray revealed that the inspiration for Ram's disability was actually from Christopher Reeve who played Superman (1978). Ray was involved in the movie's production and got to know Christopher very well, who was later paralysed for life and confined to a wheelchair after an accident. He always hoped to walk again but passed away without realising that dream. Ray ended up interweaving that real life story into Ram. [4]
