"Jack, you're being pathetic. I can't believe you're wandering around like this just because you got dumped. You didn't even go all the way with her -- you told me yourself. How can it be worth turning yourself into an old tramp? Look at the state that you're in! I want you to prove you're not a complete idiot by coming back -- just to the front door." - Cloe [1]

Cloe is one of the original Mall Rats.

After the virus wiped the adults, she found and stayed with Salene, Patsy, Paul and Bob. Cloe was later saved by Amber from the Locos and joined the Mall Rats. A huge animal lover and a loner, she is often seen spending more time with animals. After Paul disappears, Cloe comforts Patsy and they both end up being best friends.

When The Chosen take over the city, Cloe agrees to be a spy for the Mall Rats. However, she is caught and sent to the mines as punishment. After The Chosen's downfall, Cloe manages to return.

During the Technos reign, she ends up in a forbidden relationship with the techno Ved. But the Techno Leader Ram disapproved of their relationship, so he deletes Cloe while she is inside their Virtual Reality game and disappears. Ved desperately tries to get her back, but he also disappears and both were presumed dead.

Ved is later revealed to be alive and was residing at the former Techno base, he had been searching for Cloe ever since he escaped slavery. Ved later joins the Mall Rats and they continue to try looking for Cloe.

History[]

Series 1[]

Amber saves Cloe

Cloe rescued by Amber

Cloe, along with Patsy and Paul was one of the youngest of the Mall Rats tribe. Throughout season one, we see the struggle the younger ones have to go through trying to cope with life with no adults around them to guide and help. As the older members struggle, so the youngest suffer and Cloe is at first detached and quite a loner.

Cloe eventually finds a calf and names it Bluebell spending more time with her than the tribe. However, when she goes missing trying to free Bluebell, she is helped by Tai-San to return to the Mall. Cloe is known to be an animal lover and spends more of her time with the pets than the actual tribe (apart from Patsy and Paul).

After Paul's mysterious disappearance, Cloe's friendship with Patsy builds into that of a sisterly relationship and the two become firm friends, often trying to make their voices heard to the older ones of the group. When Patsy accidentally catches the new strain of the virus, Cloe chooses to be by Patsy's side regardless of the consequences.

Cloe later travels to Eagle Mountain observatory with the Mall Rats in search of the Virus Antidote. But tragedy strikes when an explosion occurs in the observatory and Amber and Zandra are killed.

When Trudy returns months later, Cloe watches her friendship with Patsy deteriorate as Trudy takes Patsy under her wing. Cloe is challenged by the thoughts of being abandoned and alone once more, just as she was when her parents were killed by the virus, but Salene and Ryan assure her that they are all a family and she will never be alone.

Cloe realises something is wrong with Trudy and tries to warn the Mall Rats, but they don't listen. Eventually Patsy realises she has been brainwashed by Trudy, and the Cloe and Patsy make up. But Cloe and the other Mall Rats are captured by The Chosen when they take over the city.

Cloe 2

Cloe after returning from the Mines

With The Chosen holding a tight reign on the city, the Mall Rats are sentenced to do hard labour and will only be allowed food and privileges if they join The Chosen. Some of the Mall Rats give in, while some form a secret resistance movement with Cloe volunteering to be a spy, despite knowing the danger. Cloe wants to do something to help defeat the people who have taken her home away from her, however she is caught spying and sent to the mines to Patsy's dismay.

After the downfall of The Chosen, Cloe returns to the Mall as a much older and cheekier girl. Cloe convinces Jack to return with her after he tries to flee due to his heartbreak over Ellie getting with Luke. Cloe learns of Patsy's supposed demise and misses her best friend, but rejoices that Amber has returned and isn't dead.

Soon, mysterious planes fly over the city and Cloe believes they are adults who have returned to save them. But Cloe soon realises they aren't adults but a new tribe called The Technos.

Series 4[]

Cloe-4-(22)

Cloe dates Ved

When The Technos invade the city and send half of the population into slavery, Cloe is one of few the Mall Rats left. Because she is still one of the youngest in the tribe, Cloe is refused to go on missions and is often asked to look after the little ones to her dismay. Cloe becomes moody, disrespectful and refused to help out, and developed a crush on the much older Pride, becoming hurt and angry when she finds he doesn't reciprocate the feelings towards her. She is soon swept up in a forbidden relationship with the Techno Ved.

Though he was sometimes cruel to her for being a virt, Ved began to care deeply for Cloe, even when she retaliated on occasion by using him to find information on the Technos for the Mall Rats. A pregnancy scare almost broke them up, but they got back together stronger than before, seemingly really in love.

Cloe Deleted

Cloe's image replaced with May's in the VR game by Ram

But the two had been warned, by both the Mall Rats and the Technos. Eventually the Techno leader Ram, decided to take Cloe out of the picture, as he did not like one of his best Technos spending time with a virt.

When Cloe entered his reality space game, she was deleted by Ram. Cloe's image was replaced with May's and seems to have been deleted by Mouse and Sammy when they shot her in the game. 'May' seems to have been Cloe as she screams: "No you don't understand, it's me!" Upon learning Cloe was deleted by Ram, Ved challenges him in a duel to try and get Cloe back but instead got badly injured. After some time, Ved ends up being deleted as well. Cloe is never mentioned again in the TV series after Jay discovers Ved's fate in Season 5.

The Tribe: A New World[]

In the prologue, a reality space version of Cloe briefly reappears as Amber's braidsmaid along with Patsy. Bray soon realizes the reality of his supposed wedding to Amber, which turns out to be in reality space, as many dead people are present at the wedding like his brother Martin/Zoot and Dal. Bray is soon awaked from it after Judd removes his Reality Space Visor.

The Tribe: A New Dawn[]

When Eloise and the Zootists capture some of the Mall Rats and take them to Eagle Mountain, it's revealed that the facility had 3 levels then previously believed. Amber wonders if the original Mall Rats like Cloe had been taken away by The Collective for their possible knowledge on Eagle Mountain.

The Tribe: (R)Evolution[]

When Ram, Jack and Ellie narrowly escape the armies of The Collective and flee to Ram's old hometown, they discover that Ved is alive and residing at the old Techno base. To Jack's disappointment, Cloe is not with Ved, who the latter has been desperately trying to locate. Ved keeps Ram, Jack and Ellie hostage so he can try trading them to The Collective for any possible information on Cloe.

Eventually, Ved realises this isn't what Jay and Cloe would have wanted him to do. Ved releases them and travels with them to The Collective base, Eden, where he reunites with the Mall Rats. Cloe however is still yet to be found, and Ved continues to search for her with the Mall Rats.

Trivia[]

  • Actress Jaimee revealed that during the show's pre-production, Cloe was initially envisioned as a white girl while Salene was a brown girl, explaining why Meryl Cassie (Ebony) originally auditioned for the latter. Jaimee was the only brown girl during the audition for Cloe's character and she strongly felt she wouldn't get the role after seeing Cloe's production sketches as a white girl. However, Cloud 9 swapped the characters' ethnicity for the final and Jaimee was given the role. [2]
  • Cloe is the character who indirectly brought the Mall Rats together. She was originally surviving with Salene, Patsy, Paul and Bob before running off into the streets and got saved by Amber and Dal, who are led to her group by Cloe. Lex, Ryan and Zandra were brought to the Mall because they found Cloe's teddy in the Mall's carpark. When Cloe gets lost in the woods, she is saved by Tai San and brings her to the Mall. Even in Series 3, Cloe brought Jack back to the Mall after he attempted to leave due to his heartbreak over Ellie.
  • Ryan mentioned that Cloe had an older sister who died from the virus. [3] Interestingly, Jaimee herself has a sister in real life.
  • Cloe is seen wearing a red-themed outfit in the Abe Messiah music video that is never seen in the show. However, it is actually the same outfit she would wear in the middle of Series 2, only that the colours were changed from Red to Blue.
  • The reason for Cloe's absence during most of Series 3 was because actress Jaimee requested time off to deal with personal issues. [4]
  • Cloe was abruptly written out of the show in Series 4 because actress Jaimee Kaire-Gataulu was fired for secretly dating co-actor Dan Weekes-Hannah (Ved) as it was against the rules. Both skipped a scheduled day of shooting which caused Cloud 9 studios to lose one hundred thousand dollars. Jaimee was immediately fired while Weekes was slowly written out of the show a few episodes later. [5] The couple soon broke up after The Tribe ended but as of 2020 Jaimee mentions still being close friends with Dan. [6] Raymond Thompson briefly discussed the incident in Jaimee's 2020 podcast and said the door was always open for both Cloe and Ved to come back if they wanted as he still holds both actors in high regard. [7]
  • While it's yet to be confirmed, some fans believe that when Cloe entered the VR game her image was replaced with May's as evident by the computer screen swapping their faces due to Ram. [8] The 'May' who we saw playing the game was actually Cloe with May's image. Cloe was unknowingly deleted by Mouse and Sammy when they shot her. This is believed due to her screaming: "No you don't understand, it's me!" before she was shot and disappeared. [9] May hadn't met Mouse and Sammy at that point as she was taken by the Technos, which is why some fans believe it was actually Cloe due to that line.
  • In a 2017 interview, Jaimee revealed that had her character not been written out of the show, Cloe was definitely on her way to becoming a Techno. While she is unsure of the final outcome, Jaimee personally envisions a happy ending where Cloe would realise her Mall Rat beginnings were important to her and return with Ved, who loved her enough to leave the Technos. [10]
  • Although Cloe doesn't appear anymore after Series 4, she can still be spotted in the opening and end credits of the show until its cancellation.
    • Similarly, she can be seen in flashbacks in Series 4 Episode 39 and 51. But Jaimee isn't credited in those episodes.
  • Ved's reappearance in The Tribe: (R)Evolution has opened the possibility that Cloe might return in future novels.
