Raymond Thompson, Cloud 9 founder and executive producer of The Tribe, wrote the screenplay, saying he had "always wanted to do a movie version and work with a bigger canvas."
Already in February 2011, there were discussions with an A-list director who expressed "a strong interest to take the helm." Richard Taylor and his team at Weta Workshop were looking forward to work on special effects and design on the project, should the project receive a green-light. Alan Gasmer and Eric Feig were co-producing the movie with Cloud 9 Screen Entertainment, and pursuing discussions with potential strategic United States partners for the Tribes feature, in addition to other Cloud 9 titles.
In June 2012, Thompson announced in a message to fans that he had completed a shooting screenplay for the motion picture, which involved three different drafts and is being budgeted and scheduled in the hopes of keeping on track for the 2014 release date. However, as of 2016, no other news has come out regarding the progress of the film. It's very possible the film is development hell, or has been cancelled altogether.
