With Blake dead, the Legion submit their allegiance to Eloise. As a result, Ebony and a captured Ram are forced to join the fanatical Zootists. Mysterious newcomer Connor is introduced as a potential love interest for Trudy. Plot Synopsis[]

Somewhere far away, Tai-San is revealed to be alive and has been forced to be a farming slave for months. She is later sold in an auction to a mysterious man who lives in a luxurious resort formally owned by the adults called The Gardens of the East. Tai San is shocked when the man flashes pictures of her former tribe, the Mall Rats, over his computer screens. The man demands that if Tai San wants to live, she'd tell him everything she knows about Eagle Mountain.

Back on the island, the Mall Rats and the Natives are still rejoicing over defeating Blake, freeing his slaves and destroying his Oil Ring a few days ago. But they're celebrations diminish when they have to deal with Ram and Ebony's disappearance, what Eloise and her Zootists are up to, and if The Collective are coming for them. Amber, Bray, Jay, Jack, Ellie, Gel, Darryl, Emma, Tiffany and Shannon decide to travel back to Arthur's Air Force Base to look for clues on The Collective and any sign of Ram. While Lex, Trudy, Salene, May, Slade, Ruby, Sammy, Lottie, Brady and Baby Bray are to stay behind at the Native Village with The Priestess and Lia, both of whom Lex are hugely infatuated by.

Meanwhile Ebony, Axel, the Legion men have a captured Ram on their hands. They return to the Oil Ring and are shocked to find it destroyed with no sign of Blake anywhere. Axel commands they go meet Blake's superior further up the island, Ebony however is not given anymore information as Axel doesn't trust her. They make it to an abandoned runway and start up some military vehicles to speed up their journey. But Ebony and Axel get into a fight over who is in charge, both demanding the Legion men to arrest the other. The men decide to stay loyal to Axel and they arrest Ebony, whom they throw into the back with Ram as they drive off. They enter a compound in the mountains and meet fanatical Zootists, one of whom is called Aras, a former member of Emma's tribe the Roaches. Later they are brought to Eloise, who is revealed to be Blake's superior and sister. The Guardian calls Eloise "Mother Divine" as she is allegedly pregnant with Bray's child. Eloise wants Ebony to suffer for Blake's death, but when she reveals that Bray is still alive with the Mall Rats on the other side of the island, they spare Ebony for the time being. In order to save herself, Ebony is forced to go through a Zootist ceremony to declare her allegiance to Zoot. Eloise then demands Ram to give the entry codes for Eagle Mountain, as he had previously been there before to retrieve the Paradise Headsets and Hibernation Chamber technology during the Techno Invasion.

The Mall Rats make it to Arthurs Airforce Base and split into teams to search the facility. Amber is deeply troubled over whether to choose Bray or Jay and wanting space, she decides to stay behind with Emma, Shannon, Tiffany and Darryl as the rest search. Jay and Gel discover a map of the island and realise that the Jzhao Li was originally headed for a mysterious "Project Eden" but got lost after the crew dies from the virus. Jack and Ellie go down a long flight of stairs into the deep basements, which Emma and her tribe had never dared to venture into as they believe it was haunted and cursed. She also reveals it was off limits when the adults were alive. After activating the lights, Jack and Ellie are shocked to discover that the complex is constructed in a similar fashion to Eagle Mountain's interior. But more shocking is that they discover active Hibernation Chambers, which are empty. Everyone regathers to speculate on what they found, believing that the adults had planned to preserve themselves in Hibernation Chambers to survive the virus, but for whatever reason they didn't make it.

Back in the Native Village, Trudy finds a man named Connor in a yacht called "Nemo" by the wreck of the Jzhao Li. Connor is found to be drunk and passes out. Lia and The Priestess are weary of Connor as he wears a pendant laden with fishbones. This is because of a prophecy that a former priestess foretold, that a creature disguised as a man would one day come to the island. According to the fable, the disguised man would be sent by the goddess of the ocean to see if the Natives were worthy. If they were, they would be rewarded, but if not, the waves would wash over the island and kill everyone. Connor later wakes up and shaves his beard, revealing to be very handsome and he charms all the girls, particularly Trudy, who falls deeply for him. Lex however, is still suspicious of Connor and openly distrusts him. Meanwhile, May has been avoiding the tribe due to Zak's death. Salene continues to offer support and May realises her feelings for Salene have returned. May confesses to her and they get together, announcing to the whole tribe later. The Priestess later reveals to everyone that she had a vision that death will visit the Mall Rats soon, leaving everyone worried.

Meanwhile at Arthurs Air Force Base, Jack finds a computer and a mysterious person contacts him. When Jack asks who they are, they refuse to tell him and say they'll be coming soon. Bray decides to travel back to Eloise's base alone, leaving behind a note that has Amber distraught. Jay leaves to try and track Bray down. Bray enters Eloise's base to find it empty. He does however, find a mural of Zoot pointing to Eagle Mountain. When Jay is still travelling to Eloise's base, he notices a ship called the Sea Ghost headed towards Arthurs Air Force Base. He returns to try and warn Amber and the Mall Rats, but discover the base raided and everyone taken. Bray follows suit and finds a message that Amber had written on a mirror with Gel's lipstick: UNDER ATTACK! THE GUARDIAN! Both return to the Native Village and regroup, realising Eloise and The Guardian are returning to Eagle Mountain. Using Connor's Yacht, Nemo, the Mall Rats head back with Lia joining them. Due to Ruby's pregnancy, Slade and Ruby stay behind with the Natives, but not before Lex's requests that they name their baby after him.

Eloise, The Guardian, Ebony, Axel and the Zootists arrive back in the abandoned city with the captured Mall Rats. They imprison them in Phoenix Mall while Emma's cries in horror as Shannon and Tiffany are taken away to be indoctrinated into the Zootist faith. Eloise takes Amber, Ram, Jack and Ellie to Eagle Mountain while The Guardian stays in the Mall to watch the captured Mall Rats. Ebony uses a replicated Zoot police car from the Sea Ghost and drives around the city with Aras and the Zootists, to tour them on Zoot's home city. Soon, the remaining Mall Rats arrive at the City on the Nemo and take residence in Trudy's former house. Bray, Lex, Jay, Trudy, Connor and Lia leave to rescue the others. If they do not return on time, Salene, May, Sammy, Lottie, Brady and Baby Bray are to flee to Lex's Love Shack that Lex previously shared with Siva.

Bray, Lex, Jay, Trudy, Connor and Lia spray paint around the city that Eloise and The Guardian are liars. Using their place in the mythology of Zootist faith, Bray, Trudy and Lex confront some Zootists to tell them where the captured Mall Rats are, which they willingly give due to fearing the figures in Zoot's life. Bray lets them go so that they'll inform The Guardian, hoping he'll send most of the Zootists out in the streets so there will be less resistance at the Mall and Eagle Mountain. Eventually they split into 3 teams. Bray, Lex and Lia head for Eagle Mountain, Jay heads for the Mall to turn off the power to confuse the Zootists, while Trudy and Connor plan to regroup with the others at Trudy's old house. However, Connor suddenly turns on Trudy and kidnaps her to the Mall. Connor is revealed to be a Bounty Hunter for Blake, who initially wanted Ram. But after Blake's demise and Ram missing, he decided to target Trudy, as she was originally the Supreme Mother. Connor even informs The Collective of their rescue plans and that some of the Mall Rats are hiding at Trudy's former home. Although they flee to Lex's Love Shack, they are captured and brought to the Mall. Jay is also captured when he sabotages the Mall's power.

Arriving at the Mall, Connor demands a huge reward for helping to kidnap Trudy. But he is thrown into the cage with the Mall Rats as The Guardian no longer deems him useful. The Guardian, holding Brady, wants Trudy executed for betraying the faith. Ebony, horrified at The Guardian's dwindling mental state, decides to announce that she had a vision from Zoot, who tells her that Eloise and The Guardian are liars, and that executing Trudy is not what Zoot wants. Seeing that this is having an effect on the Zootists, Trudy jumps in to say the same. When The Guardian lets go of Brady, she runs to Trudy, which some of the Zootists take as a huge sign that Ebony and Trudy are telling the truth. Their loyalties become split between The Guardian and Ebony, and each side begins to fight. Ebony releases the Mall Rats who join the fierce battle. Shannon, Tiffany and pregnant mothers of the Zootists faith, drop debris onto the battle from the second floor of the Mall. A lamppost hits The Guardian's head, causing him to go into a crazed frenzy that makes his elite guards flee. The Mall Rats and Ebony win the battle but Jay, Gel and Darryl die from their injuries.

At Eagle Mountain, an unwilling Ram keys in a code that opens a previously unrevealed Level 2. An announcement plays when they enter the room, which instructs the visitors to give the Antidote to the sleeping Technicians in the Hibernation Chambers. From there, they will awaken to use headsets to contact any surviving adults over the world. But the Hibernation Chambers are empty and the headsets gone, Ram explains the technicians were already dead when he first arrived at Eagle Mountain during the Techno Invasion. Ram also stole the Headsets for his Virtual Reality ambitions during his reign over the city. Amber and Jack now realise that the surviving children were meant to bring the antidote to the sleeping adults and revive them. But they wonder why they previously never heard this on their last visit, speculating the explosion that killed Zandra wasn't an accident and it covered up the reminder of the message concerning Level 2.

Eloise demands Ram to open Level 3, but he claims he doesn't know the entry code. Eloise gives Ram, Amber, Jack and Ellie a few hours to figure the code or there will be consequences. Jack tries a configured code, using numerical equivalent of letters, typing in EAGLE MOUNTAIN which opens Level 3. Everyone is shocked in disbelief when they find not only a giant computer with an advanced AI called K.A.M.I (standing for Knowledge Artificial Machine Intelligence) but also Hibernation Chambers with 38 living adults inside. The K.A.M.I computer recognises Ram, to which he confesses that he had been stalling to keep himself alive. He also says that none of the Technos ever knew about Level 3 as he feared if they did, they might betray him to The Collective. So he was determined to protect this place, but Ram still wanted to investigate further only for Mega to seize control of the Technos. Ram never dared to wake up the adults, thinking they might either have a dormant virus or die outside from possible lingers of the virus. Eloise is confused how the computer is also named Kami like The Collective leader, whom she recalls was a man and had slept with him, becoming pregnant with his child, but now thinks she might have been tricked. Regardless, Eloise wants them to locate a hard-drive which Kami is after, containing the secrets of all the adults. She also decides to kill the sleeping adults despite the efforts of Amber, Jack and Ellie. Ram locates the hard drive hidden in one of the hibernation chambers and orders the K.A.M.I computer to shutdown Eagle Mountain, causing a blackout.

Bray, Lex and Lia arrive at Eagle Mountain and Bray goes to scout the perimeters. Lex and Lia try to find the Gaians for backup but discover that the Eco Camp is deserted, thinking they had fled when the Virus Mark II was released. Lia however, uses tools from the camp to create a huge slingshot to throw rocks. They hurry back to find Bray captured. But during the blackout, Bray manages to subdue Eloise. Ram threatens to destroy the hard drive if Axel and his men take another step, to which Eloise decides to surrender. They bring them back to the Mall and lock them up with The Guardian. Amber finally decides to choose Bray instead of Jay, but upon returning she is devastated to know Jay had died. The deceased are taken up to Eagle Mountain and are buried next to Zandra. Meanwhile some of the Zootists flee on the Sea Ghost, while the remaining Zootists are de-radicalised by Bray, Lex, Trudy and Ebony. Amber allows the former Zootists to stay at the Mall. Connor is spared for not only helping the Mall Rats in the end, but also because they discovered he had known Dr Jane Gideon, whose journal they had found on the Jzhao Li. Connor begs Trudy to forgive him but she absolutely refuses, so he leaves on the Nemo, with only Ebony bidding him farewell. Jack realises they can't access the hard drive without a special wire and continue to search for one. Amber and Bray rename Baby Bray as Baby Jay, in honour of Jay. Eloise claims The Collective will come back for her as she is carrying Kami's child, leaving the Mall Rats prepared for a future attack.

Months later on the island, Slade and Ruby give birth to their daughter, whom they name Alexis after Lex. The Priestess and the Natives celebrate their newest tribe member. But not long after the birth, they spot a mysterious drone hovering above them. The drone lingers back and forth before disappearing.

The book ends with a puzzle that is in the same configured coding Jack had used to unlock Level 3 on Eagle Mountain. Which reads as:

3912284833 494 6974 3632 9696 12 1 333831533 737534 94 974 548519 397776856. 432 39793 6143 49432336, 3436 76 926 163325942, 5615 193282 212 33258633 59 0916 2736 1 48519 0145 86 563 548519 765699956. 575 5615 82 199 43431933 86 1 632 59794492. 163 5682 82 1 7322153 4497 563 475743. 692 - 8’7 2743 697 2899 128. 76334251631593. 58436 5615 5873 541439 612 635 59 53 3823943433. 3436 494 76 5363415896. 575 85 2899. 8715863 614865 563 1589856 59 59 5138 163 233 26343 85 199 53516. 84 697 56868 15975 85 9965 163 6143, 563 7625346 82 86 1 632 3126, 26836 2899 5843 697 563 162234. 76589 974 6325 3965135. 41432399. 23 2899 7335 15186. 9943 8178 53634115896 - ((

Trivia[]

  • Final appearances of Jay, Gel, and Darryl.
  • First appearance of Tai-San since the Series 4 finale. However, she only appears in the prologue and isn't seen again until the next novel The Tribe: (R)Evolution.
  • First appearance of Eagle Mountain since Series 3.
  • First appearance of the Mall since the Series 5 finale.
  • In Chapter 4, May is revealed to have been prescribed medication for depression before the virus.
  • This novel reveals that adults are still alive and appear for the first time sleeping in Hibernation Chambers, which are hidden inside Eagle Mountain. Although Eloise kills them in their sleep, the possibility there are more sleeping adults in other similar bases is left open ended.
  • In the Epilogue, Bray and Amber rename their baby as Jay in his memory, who tragically died in a battle with the Zootists. However, some fans find this bizarre because Amber has renamed her baby after her former lover, which ironically was first suggested by Bray himself, despite him competing for Amber's affections against Jay. These same fans claim it would be weird and creepy for Baby Jay to grow up and learn the person he was named after had romantic/sexual relations with his own mother at one point. Regardless, other fans liked the sentiment to rename him as Jay to honour the fallen hero.
  • The coded message at the end of the book appears to hint that Time Travel will be introduced in the future. References to the spin-off The New Tomorrow is also mentioned, which appears to be attempting to bridge the gap between both shows.

Errors[]

  • On the front cover, Ram is still shown in his Techno uniform, even though he had gotten rid of it since the previous novel, The Tribe: A New World. It is unknown why the graphic designer does not show Ram in his Virtual Reality outfit instead, which has him in normal clothes as the novel describes.
  • In Chapter 4, when Salene is recalling her old memories, it's mentioned that she had tried to jump off a bridge but Ryan stops her. This is an obvious error as Ryan was the one who tried to jump off a bridge but Salene stopped him in Series 2 Episode 37. Salene did try to jump off the Mall's roof in Series 3 Episode 33, but was stopped by Bray, Trudy, Tally and Brady. These two separate events had mistakenly been merged into one by the writer.
  • In Chapter 8, Ebony meets The Guardian again and realizes the mystery is solved of where he had disappeared to just before the Techno invasion. But this contradicts Series 3 Episode 52 when everyone, including Ebony, believed Alice had killed The Guardian out of revenge for Ned's murder. The truth was that The Guardian had escaped unbeknownst to everyone. None of the characters mention this nor are they shocked that The Guardian is alive despite them previously believing he was murdered by Alice.
  • In Chapter 21, when Eloise imprisons the Mall Rats in the Mall's metal grille gates, Jack remarks he never thought he'd be trapped inside it. This is a contradiction as he was trapped before by Tribe Circus in Series 1 Episode 46.
