"Zoot be praised and to his Chosen victory." - The Chosen's Slogan

The Chosen were a religious cult who believed that Zoot was a god and aimed to spread Zoot's will to the world through authoritarian rule.

They were formed after Zoot's death, as a faction of the Locos who did not want to follow Ebony's command. Their leader was Jaffa, who claimed the title of "The Guardian". Chosen followers believed that they were each chosen by Zoot to spread his word.

The Chosen were defeated in Series 3 and disbanded. But The Guardian escaped and for a time, was a captured slave of the Technos. Eloise eventually found him on a slave ship and recruited him to form a successor tribe called the Zootists, who are more fanatical as they desire Eloise to continue Zoot's bloodline by conceiving a child with Bray.

Ranks in the Chosen were displayed by the colour of their robes. After they took over the city their ranks were managed into a more central group. Only males had their hair coloured in bright blue style.

Using the mall as their base, the Chosen had a network of radio towers, food and motor patrols and lookout towers. They set up a large number of outposts and supply buildings that were secured and guarded from attack. The Chosen had access to small mobile generators, a motor pool of Harley motor vans and cargo trucks. The Chosen were into alchemy, having Jack work at "some pretty weird stuff" in a laboratory when he was taken away from the Mall.

Series 2[]

The Chosen were formed sometime after Ebony became the Locos' leader. The Guardian and some of his cohorts make their way to the city and gatecrash a tribe leaders' meeting. They kidnap Trudy, as they believe she is the Supreme Mother for having a child with Zoot. They also capture Ebony in the process. She escapes but Trudy is taken to a boat and sails away with The Chosen, against her will. Although Trudy eventually returned to the Mall, she had become brainwashed. Soon after, Wolf informs Ellie that the Chosen are finished; unfortunately, that is not so. Wolf is an informant who, along with Trudy, conspires to take over the city with The Chosen.

Due to their large numbers by the time they invaded the city, the tribe leaders quickly surrendered to the Chosen. Also, they were a resource of food and supplies, and provided safety as long as one worshipped Zoot. The rights and freedoms of non-believers were revoked, to the point that only The Chosen, their acolytes and followers were allowed to walk the streets.

Series 3[]

When the Chosen invaded the City, they took over the Phoenix Shopping Mall, and the Mall Rats were given a choice - to either become their slaves or to follow the will of Zoot - a choice which separated some members of the tribe. Patsy and Ryan in particular were taken away and not seen again for trying to go against The Chosen. Jack and Cloe were also sent away but later managed to return.

The Mall Rats form an alliance with the Gaians in recruiting other tribes to resist The Chosen. Due to The Guardian's declining sanity, he attempts to execute Trudy but she escapes thanks to the Mall Rats. Tai-San is named the new Supreme Mother, who secretly tried changing The Guardian but only made him worse. His lieutenant, Luke, deserts The Chosen for the Mall Rats after realising he was insane.

With his insanity going off the rails, The Guardian tries to set off a suicide bomb in the Mall so that he and everyone will be: "Reunited with Zoot." This attempt failed as the Mall Rats were able to disarm the bomb and The Guardian was locked up. However, both The Guardian and a captured Luke escaped as the Technos started invading the City.

Series 5[]

While Luke's status is unknown, The Guardian ended up being captured by the Technos and was sold into slavery. He ends up in a cage on the same slave compound that holds both Alice and KC.

However, The Guardian is later taken on a slave ship where Eloise finds and releases him. Manipulated by Eloise, he forms the Zootists with Eloise, who is under the orders of The Collective. The Zootists succeed The Chosen and are more fanatical as they desire Eloise to conceive a child to continue Zoot's bloodline.

Trivia[]

  • It was never revealed how The Chosen knew that Brady was Zoot's child. When Zoot first entered the Mall, he didn't know Trudy was pregnant and took that secret to his grave when he died. [1] Ebony later finds out Zoot died, but Bray makes a deal with her to leave the Mall Rats alone and nothing about Brady was mentioned. [2] When Ebony announces herself as the new Loco leader, Jaffa and some Locos break away off-screen and we see them as The Chosen in Series 2. [3] Although The Chosen are shown to be spying on the Mall Rats, nothing about Brady being Zoot's child is mentioned whenever this happens. [4] Meaning the whole time no one could have known Brady is Zoot's child. This leaves a major plot hole in The Chosen storyline that is never tied up.
  • When they first debuted in Series 2, the Chosen had members who were seen in Red, Purple and Black robes. However members wearing these colours disappeared when they kidnapped Trudy and Brady, only reappearing near the end of the season. The last time such robe colours are seen was the final episode of Series 2. It is unknown why these robes disappeared entirely with only the blue robes remaining in Series 3.
  • The Chosen's belief system is clearly borrowed from the religion of Christianity and the Bible:
    • They worship Zoot, Trudy and Brady as their holy trinity. It resembles the Holy Family who are Joseph, Mary and Baby Jesus. Although the official trinity in Christianity is God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
    • The word "chosen" is used numerous times in the Bible in reference to the Jews who were God's chosen people that were tasked to spread God's message to others. This would later include Gentiles (non-Jews) as chosen people in the New Testament.
    • They refer to each other as brothers and sisters, or brethren. In Christianity, members also refer to each other as brothers and sisters. The word "brethren" is often used in English Bible translations and is a common Christian phrase.
    • They proclaim that Zoot is love. [5] In the Bible, God is love.
    • Zoot is the tree and followers are the fruit. [6] In the Bible, Jesus is called the Vine and followers are branches that bear good fruit.
    • A follower of Zoot has to be "born again". [7] In the Bible, born again refers to spiritual rebirth for new believers.
    • The Guardian has Zoot's teachings in a book. [8] Similar to how Christians follow the Bible as God's word.
    • The Guardian is the acting head who is chaste. [9] This is similar to the Pope of the Catholic Church who must also be chaste.
    • The Guardian refers to unbelievers as "heathens". [10] The term overlaps with the word Pagan, which was first used by Christians in the 4th century to refer to people who weren't Christians.
    • Trudy refers to the unbelieving Mall Rats as "lost sheep". [11] In the Bible, Jesus is referred to as a loving shepherd and followers are His sheep. Lost sheep wandering outside the fold are to be brought in.
    • The character Wolf was sent to be a spy among the Mall Rats. He initially appeared friendly but turned out to be a Chosen infiltrator. His name is a clear reference to the idiom "Wolf in Sheep's Clothing" which is a term that originated in the Bible (Matthew 7:15).
    • Their reign over the city resembles a theocracy, meaning a government ruled by religious priests in the name of God. During the medieval era, the Roman Church operated as a theocracy.
    • Chosen followers have robes with hoods. Catholic Benedictine monks also have robes with hoods.
    • They persecute non-believers and enforce indoctrination. This is similar to actual history when Roman Catholicism, at their height, persecuted anyone who disagreed with them and forced conversion with violence from roughly 538 AD to 1798 AD.
