"Because I'm a Mall Rat. And you know what that means? We defeated the Locos, we found the antidote to the virus, we got rid of the Chosen. The Mall Rats have always taken care of you, and we always will."
―Ebony

The Mall Rats are the main focal point of The Tribe. Living in the Mall, they believe in creating a new and better world, one without the mistakes of the adults - and a place where everyone can live in peace.

The mall, a place which they can all call home, is a sanctuary where they can escape the terror and insanity which lurks in a post-apocalyptic world.

Symbol of the Mall Rats

The symbol of the Mall Rats is a blue five-pointed pentagram encompassed by a circle. Some seem to think that this symbol was first discovered by Dal on the farm, but it was actually already installed into the Mall Rats long before he found the amulet.

Tai-San was the one that actually decided on the symbol the Mall Rats adopted and she also stamped it onto all of the hands of the members of the tribe in Episode 6 of Season 2. The pentagram symbol is typically stamped onto the left hand. Tai-San initially gave it to them as a symbol of protection for the tribe; so that everyone in the city would see it and know exactly who they were. She also gave it to them thinking that no harm would come to them.

When Dal found an amulet necklace at the Farm in Series 2 Episode 24, he showed it to Tai-San and she knew that it was more than just coincidence - it was destiny.

History[]

The Mall Rats were assembled seemingly through coincidence. Amber and Dal were on their way to the countryside when they rescued the young Cloe from the Locos. She led them to the group she had strayed from: Salene, Patsy, Paul and Bob the dog. Lex, Ryan and Zandra barged in on the group while escaping from the Locos. Eventually, they all sought shelter in a mall only inhabited by Jack. Bray, along with the pregnant Trudy, also came looking for shelter.

In order to realize their dreams of creating a better world, the Mall Rats have had to come through many different hardships. It is the Mall Rats who risked their lives to discover the antidote after the second wave of virus appeared, and the Mall Rats who rose above all others to defeat the Locos, the Chosen, and even the Technos. They found the antidote to the virus and gave it free to the city rather than gain the power it held. They also set up a bill of rights, started a newspaper called The Amulet and started a market place and trade system.

Trivia[]

  • The naming of the Mall Rats has been inconsistent throughout the franchise's history. It was originally spelt "Mallrats" on Tribeworld (website), which still maintains the same spelling. The show itself is inconsistent as well, an example is Series 5 Episode 10 that spells it as "Mallrat" on Mega's computer when he looks up Jack's data, but Series 5 Episode 48 depicts it as "Mall Rats" on the tribe flag that Darryl carries. However, the release of the novels in 2011 onwards started spelling it as "Mall Rats" with a spacing. This is also evident especially for The Tribe: Birth of the Mall Rats (2012). As a result the naming is considered retconned to Mall Rats, although some fans still spell it as Mallrats, which causes a division within the fandom.
  • Lex, Trudy, Salene, Jack, Ebony and Brady are the only Mall Rats to appear in all 5 seasons of the show.
  • Ebony is the only member of the Locos to have joined the Mall Rats.
  • Alice and Ellie are the only members of the Farm Girls to have joined the Mall Rats.
  • Luke is the only member of The Chosen to have joined the Mall Rats.
  • Pride is the only member of the Gaians to have joined the Mall Rats.
  • Dee is the only member of the Mosquitos to have joined the Mall Rats.
  • Jay, Siva, Ram and Ved are the only members of the Technos to have joined the Mall Rats. This makes the tribe consist of many ex-Technos.
  • Darryl is the only member of the Demon Dogs to have joined the Mall Rats.
  • Amber, Ebony, Trudy, Salene, Patsy, May and Siva are the only Mall Rats to have betrayed the tribe at some point and rejoined later.
    • Tai San, Cloe and KC have joined The Chosen but they were spies for the Mall Rats and never actually betrayed the tribe. Tai San was later captured and turned into a Techno yet still remained faithful to the Mall Rats. Brady was also apart of The Chosen but since she was still so young and was unable to comprehend what was going on, it can't be considered betrayal.
  • The Chosen took away Danni, Jack, Cloe, Patsy and Ryan from the tribe. Jack and Cloe managed to escape while Ryan reunited with the Mall Rats in The Tribe: (R)Evolution. Patsy and Danni are the only Mall Rats that The Chosen took away who are still missing.
  • The Technos are responsible for the most number of disappearances and deaths of the Mall Rats. Those on the list are Bray, Tai-San, KC, Alice, May, Luke, Andy, Tally, Jack, Ellie, Charlie (presumably), Cloe and Pride.
    • May, Jack, Ellie, Bray, Tai San and Alice are the only Mall Rats to have returned successfully while the remaining (aside from Pride) are still in captivity. It remains to be seen whether or not they will ever return.
  • Lex, Ebony, Sammy and Lottie are currently the only Mall Rats to not have been kidnapped for a long period of time against their will and disappeared before returning to the tribe. This does not count those who have left voluntarily or died.
  • Dee, Patch, Mouse, Slade and Ruby are the only Mall Rats who have decided to leave the tribe on their own volition.
  • Starting with The Tribe: A New World, new comers Emma, Shannon, Tiffany and Lia have joined the Mall Rats. Although after the events of The Tribe: (R)Evolution, Emma and her young siblings have decided to stay at Eden while Lia has gone missing.
