"I always end up getting hurt."
―Alice

Alice was the leader of the Farm Girls. She is the older sister of Ellie and is protective of her. After Ellie was cured from the virus due to the efforts of the Mall Rats, both Alice and Ellie joined their tribe.

Alice remained a very loyal member of the Mall Rats. When The Chosen took over the city and forced Alice into slavery, she refused to join them and started a resistance within the Mall. After The Chosen's defeat, she started a relationship with Ned, who was later murdered by The Guardian.

When the Technos invaded the city, Alice was one of the handful of Mall Rats to be captured and shipped off by plane. For a time, Alice was the captive of an unknown tribe on an island alongside KC and The Guardian. Until she was sold yet again into the hands of The Collective, where she would reunite with the Mall Rats and her sister Ellie.

Personality[]

As an older sister, Alice is fiercely protective of Ellie. She is fun loving and can be rowdy but deep down she is kind and sensitive and has wisdom, which she offers Ellie and others who need help.

Angry at injustice, Alice has a hot temper. She is a formidable foe but a fantastic friend. Her friendship with Tai San helps in cooling her temper.

History[]

Series 1[]

Alice (2)

Alice as the leader of the Farm Girls

Alice was the leader of a tribe called The Farm Girls. Able to stand her ground and fight for what she believes in, we are initially introduced to the powerful and comforting presence that is Alice during the wedding preparations between Zandra and Lex.

During an encounter at the local farm, Alice easily keeps Lex in check and ensures that he doesn’t take advantage of any of the women who are a part of the Farm Girls. She agrees to trade several items with him, and they even find common ground in their music tastes. It is clear there is an attraction towards him, but she wishes him the best of luck.

Series 2[]

When the virus started to infect the kids, Alice came to the Mall after receiving fake antidote for her sister, Ellie. But she seeks vengeance on Lex and the Mall Rats after giving her fake antidote. It is this encounter which sees both Ellie and herself integrate into the Mall Rats when she discovers that Tai San is in need of some protection, whether she likes it or not. We begin to delve into her persona, as Alice reveals that she is both strong, loyal, but also too quick to fall in love.

Ali (14)

Alice falls for Lex

She shows her strength in various showdowns with other members of the tribe – including Lex, KC, and Ebony. Becoming Tai San’s bodyguard seemed like a perfect fit. Her loyalty to Tai San is unmatched, and no one wants to mess with Alice. In her own mind she has pledged her allegiance to her and becomes her most loyal friend. Her loyalties are tested however when she moves over to become Lex’s deputy within the market. Working so closely with Lex she starts to fall in love with him, unaware that he is currently seeing Tai San.

Unfortunately, Alice falls for the same trap that many people in love create for themselves. She begins to forge a relationship in her head that doesn’t necessarily exist and this creates a problem. She pours her heart out to her best friend, Tai San, unaware of the pain she is about to feel. Though Tai San tells Lex that he has to break Alice down gently, he is unable, or unwilling, to hurt Alice in this way. When she is finally told the truth, Alice feels completely betrayed, not only by the man she has given her heart to but by her ‘supposed’ best friend – who she had been loyal to for so long.

Needing space and room to breathe, Alice then does a side move to work for Ebony amongst the Militia. She brings her loyalty with her and her unrivalled strength. The Chosen eventually come and capture Alice, but Ebony rescues her with the intention of fleeing the city. However, Alice changed her mind and returned to the Mall to try warning the Mall Rats. She unfortunately falls into the hands of The Chosen who took over the city.

Series 3[]

Ned and Alice

Alice gets with Ned

Alice was held as a hostage within the Mall with the other Mall Rats and was treated as a slave. Alice didn't stand for anything The Chosen threw at her, and decided to create a secret resistance in the Mall recruiting the help of Ellie, Cloe, Patsy and KC. However, Cloe and Patsy were caught spying and were taken away.

She was furious at the laziness of the newly come Ned. Despite all of Ned’s faults, Alice can see the love that he possesses, and wanting to be loved back, she charges forward. It is this relationship that begins to change her, enabling her to grow softer and more happy in herself. Realisation dawns that she doesn’t have to be the warrior any more.

This happiness however doesn’t last. Alice spirals down into a pit of depression and confusion when The Guardian kills Ned. In her unfit state of mind, she believes that she has also killed The Guardian, but he has escaped. However, a new threat enters the city as a mysterious plane arrives.

Series 4[]

Alice is captured by the Technos and is shipped off by plane. This leaves her sister Ellie extremely distraught at the thought of never seeing her again. Alice's true status was unknown for a time.

Series 5[]

Near the end of Series 5, Alice revealed to be alive. She is caged on an island with KC and The Guardian by an unnamed tribe. Alice tells KC that she had been on Labour Island for about a month.

She is informed by KC that he had been with Bray in one of the camps before the latter was shipped off to another location. According to what KC was told, Labour Island is just a holding pace before they are shipped off to a permanent location.

The Tribe: A New Dawn[]

While in captivity, Tai San is shown images of Ryan, Patsy, Paul, KC, Danni and Alice. Possibly hinting that they are all captives of The Collective.

The Tribe: (R)Evolution[]

Alice is finally seen again when Tai San, who had been traded by various tribes, is sold to Lakeside Resort, Eden. The location belongs to The Collective. Alice recounts how she had been walking outside the Mall for a walk to grieve Ned, when The Technos invaded and captured her. She was shipped off to a different island by plane and forced to to arduous field work, which was easier for her as she was a farm girl from young. She is later sold to a sea-faring tribe called The Orcas, where the oversized leader called "The Captain" tried to woo Alice to be his bride. Alice doesn't reciprocate and is put up for auction on Labour Island where The Collective takes her to Eden, where she would reunite with Ryan and Tai San.

Alice would later reunite with the rest of the Mall Rats when they are captured and sent to Eden. Ellie however, managed to escape and is not with them. Because the Mall Rats are trapped against their will, they try to escape but to no avail. Later Bray and Alice mysterious disappear, to the horror of the other Mall Rats. Both were actually taken by another group secretly to The Void, which is a holding area for the resistance against The Collective. They rescue Ebony and Emma from The Cube and rejoin the Mall Rats. Eden plunges into chaos from the K.A.M.I system at Eagle Mountain attacks their base, which was accidentally caused by Ram. Some of the Zootists believe the Mall Rats are responsible and a battle ensues.

After the battle, The Collective underwent numerous changes to its once feared programs, as their leader Cami had not realised the abuse that happened behind her back. Alice reunites with her sister Ellie when she travels to Eden. Alice decides to stay behind in Eden with Ryan and Hawk to form a new agricultural unit.

Trivia[]

  • Alice was elevated to the main cast in Series 2 because her brief appearance in Series 1 was popular with fans. When fans were asked who their favourite Series 1 guest character was, Alice was the top pick. [1]
  • Alice was written out of the show in Series 4 because actress Vanessa Stacey wanted to try new things and challenge herself while she was in her early 20s. Vanessa flew to Europe during Series 4 and landed back in New Zealand for a holiday at the close of Series 5, which is why she appeared in the last few episodes. Vanessa had also stated she never intended to return to The Tribe full-time, meaning that the rumours of Alice returning in the cancelled Series 6 are untrue. [2]
    • However it's possible Vanessa would have a limited role as she was a voice coach for the spin-off series The New Tomorrow which aired 2 years after The Tribe was cancelled.
    • Alice was present in the abandoned Series 6 scripts, excerpts of which were released in the 2011 book Keeping the Dream Alive. Meaning Alice was definitely planned to be apart of Series 6 in some way.
  • When Series 5 was still airing, an article was released on Tribeworld.com that teased possible storylines of how the season would end. One of them being that Alice and KC are living in an elite city of the Technos to breed a new population, but not wanting to be apart of it, they try returning to the City. Although none of these teases ultimately came to pass, this is similiar to the cancelled storylines of Series 6 where The Privileged intend to breed a new elite generation. The only difference is that Alice and KC are their Discarded slaves. [3]
  • Alice was not seen again until the release of The Tribe: (R)Evolution in 2019, marking 16 years since her last brief appearance in Series 5.
  • Alice was voted by fans as 7th Best Heroine in a 2015 poll. [4]
